Muhammad Amin-Khan ordered the building of the madrasah and minaret in 1845-1855. It was supposed to be the grandest architectural ensembles of the Islamic world as a demonstration of the might of the Khiva Khanate, which for centuries had managed to stay independent despite various attempts to conquer it.
