Travel Insurance for Georgia, Armenia & Central Asia 2026
November 3, 2026
Quick answer: Georgia requires every foreign visitor to hold health and accident insurance of at least 30,000 GEL (roughly US$11,000) covering the whole stay, from 1 January 2026. Armenia's e-visa conditions for Indian applicants include valid travel or health insurance. For other Central Asian trips insurance is not a legal requirement on every route, but it is strongly advisable, particularly for mountain and winter activities. Ask for a policy in English that shows your name, dates, the countries covered and the cover amount.
Indian travellers often treat insurance as an optional extra. For Georgia and Armenia that is no longer safe: a missing or non-compliant policy can delay a visa or cause trouble at the border. This guide sets out the rules that apply in 2026 and what to look for in a policy for the mountains and cities of the region.

Armenia: part of the e-visa conditions

Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan: insurance is strongly recommended with the e-visa.

What to check in a policy
Medical and hospital cover: a limit that meets the country's minimum (30,000 GEL for Georgia) and preferably well above it.
Emergency evacuation and repatriation: important for mountain regions, where the nearest good hospital may be hours away.
Adventure and winter sports: skiing, snowboarding, trekking and horse riding are often excluded or need an add-on.
Trip delay and baggage: useful with connecting flights.
Pre-existing conditions: declare them, or the claim can be refused.
Dates and countries: the policy must name every country on your route and cover every day, including arrival and departure.
Proof: keep a PDF on your phone, a printout, and the insurer's emergency number.
Rules change. Confirm the current requirement for your destination on the official government portal before you buy.
